What is Starts at Home Week?

Starts at Home Week is a yearly celebration of the crucial work our care workers provide. It acts as a reminder that a decent home is the first essential in turning people’s lives around and that those who support our vulnerable people in accessing it should receive the recognition they deserve. The following case study is an example of just that and we hope that it shines a light on the brave stories of the most vulnerable in our society.

Background

SP moved into Hestia-supported accommodation after being referred by adult social services’ disability team – SP is deaf and has dyscalculia. She was informed by her social worker that her accommodation would be adapted by social services. Unfortunately, her social worker had to take long-term sickness. An intervention was made the disability sensory team was contacted. SP was then promised that she would be sent a sensory doorbell and carbon monoxide detector. However, lockdown was introduced and these adaptions got lost in red tape.

Getting the support needed

Hestia felt it was important that SP was able to tell who was at her door, so funding was found to pay for a sensory door alarm. Cleveland Fire Brigade was contacted regarding a sensory fire alarm, which was also fitted in the property. We then contacted the manager of adult social services and a new social worker was allocated. They were able to fund a carer so that SP could attend college.

Where are they now?

SP  is currently attending a course for child care and her tenancy will revert to general needs – she is thriving, budgeting and paying her bills independently!
