What is Starts at Home Week?

Starts at Home Week is a yearly celebration of the crucial work our care workers provide. It acts as a reminder that a decent home is the first essential in turning people’s lives around and that those who support our vulnerable people in accessing it should receive the recognition they deserve. The following case study is an example of just that and we hope that it shines a light on the brave stories of the most vulnerable in our society.

Background

Marnie Rauf came to supported housing as a looked-after child in November 2020.  Marnie was placed into supported lodgings for a while before coming to Rainham House. She settled in very well and has flourished with support from onsite staff.

Getting the support needed

While living independently and studying for her A-Levels, Marnie has achieved an A* and two As in Sociology, English Language and English Literature.

Earlier this year, Marnie was recognised by judges of the Orwell Youth Prize for a hard-hitting and honest description of a girl who decided to move away from her family after a difficult childhood who then struggled with the independence and freedom she gained.

Marnie’s teachers are delighted with Marnie’s results and are incredibly proud of her achievement – she is truly inspirational.

Marnie said, “I was totally overwhelmed by my results and couldn’t stop shaking. I just wanted to tell my Dad – he was so proud of me. I would just like to thank all the staff for their care and support because without them I could not have achieved this.”

Where are they now?

Marnie left North Star in September 2022 and is now going on to study English Literature at the University of Durham. She aspires to be a journalist – either working on TV or as an opinion columnist.

Marnie has also worked alongside the mayor of Middlesbrough and gained work experience with Middlesbrough council’s ‘Big Takeover’, where local teenagers were given strategic operational roles to manage within the council for one week.

Good luck, Marnie!
