What is Starts at Home Week?

Starts at Home Week is a yearly celebration of the crucial work our care workers provide. It acts as a reminder that a decent home is the first essential in turning people’s lives around and that those who support our vulnerable people in accessing it should receive the recognition they deserve. The following case study is an example of just that and we hope that it shines a light on the brave stories of the most vulnerable in our society.

Background

LF had been sleeping rough for a year before he moved into a hostel in Middlesbrough. He has experienced a history of anxiety, depression and drug and alcohol abuse, which led to a cycle of minor crimes and homelessness.

LF was referred to drug and alcohol services whilst living in the hostel and started a methadone programme, as well as engaging with support to reduce his alcohol intake. He lived in the hostel for five years before being referred to the Rough Sleepers Accommodation Programme with North Star.

Moving into supported accommodation

Since moving into supported accommodation with North Star, LF has engaged well with weekly support sessions. He had support completing housing benefit and council tax benefit applications, setting up utility bills and making sure he was claiming the correct benefits to maximise his income. He has managed his tenancy well – the property is clean and well-maintained.

LF has two young daughters who live with their mum. He has supervised contact three times per week, and now he has secured his own tenancy, he has been able to have some unsupervised time with his children.

Where are they now?

LF is still engaging with specialist support services, but now he feels happier and more settled with his life. He has found the confidence to enrol on an IT training course delivered in-house – he is hoping this will lead to employment opportunities in the future.

LF said, “The house is immaculate. I’m so pleased with the support I am getting, it’s put me back on my feet.”

Through positive engagement and partnership working, a vulnerable person with complex needs is now in the process of getting his life back on track.
