Saving water at home

Water is something we all rely on every day. Small actions can significantly reduce water waste, protect the environment and lower household bills.

This is important all of the time, however next week is Water Saving Week, so we've put together some tips to help:

Spot and report leaks quickly

Don't leave leaks alone, no matter how small. If you notice any of the following in your home, please report it so we can arrange a repair:

  • A dripping tap (this can waste over 5,000 litres of water every year!)
  • A leaking toilet
  • Water escaping from pipes
  • Damp patches caused by plumbing

Click here to access a useful playlist to find out how to spot and stop leaks from showers, garden taps, toilets and more.

Could you use less water?

Northumbrian Water's free calculator can help you see how you could save water and energy by showing you how much you use at the moment and giving you support and advice to cut back where you can:

Don't doubt the impact that small changes can make. Next time you use your appliances, see if you can:

  • Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth
  • Fill your washing machine or dishwasher up fully before turning on and use the Eco setting
  • Collect and reuse water to water your plants. You could use a water butt or collect the water you use to clean your fruit and veg to reuse
  • Fill your kettle only with the amount of water you need
  • Use a shower timer or put on your favourite song and see if you can finish your shower before it ends
