Help with household costs if you're on a low income

Housing Benefit can help you pay your rent if you’re unemployed, on a low income or claiming benefits. It’s being replaced by Universal Credit.

You can only make a new claim for Housing Benefit if either of the following apply:

  • you have reached State Pension age
  • you live in supported, sheltered or temporary housing

The amount of Housing Benefit you receive depends on your individual circumstances and takes into account:

  • Income and savings
  • Who lives in your household
  • The amount of rent you are charged

For more information on making a claim, go to your local council’s website or visit: Housing Benefit: Eligibility - GOV.UK
