A supported housing scheme for older people in Stockton-on-Tees has benefited from a complete roof replacement following a £600k investment from North Star.
Aspen Gardens is a sheltered accommodation scheme comprising 50 flats for people aged over 55. The scheme provides safe, secure and accessible homes, alongside support that enables residents to live independently for longer
The roofing works were successfully delivered by Evenii Ltd, providing enhanced weather protection, improved energy efficiency and thermal performance, alongside a reduction in reactive repairs.
In addition to the roofing works, three internal vaulted ceilings were completed, including decoration.
Throughout the project, regular tea and coffee meetings were held to keep staff and residents informed.
To mark the completion of the project, North Star hosted an event in the scheme’s communal bistro and lounge to thank residents for their patience throughout the works and celebrate the improvements to Aspen Gardens.
Residents enjoyed afternoon tea, ice cream, garden games, hand treatments from Kirena Massage & Beauty and live entertainment from local performers Marie St Clair and Georgio.
Residents also enjoyed a tombola, with prizes donated by North Star, Evenii Ltd, CK Plastering, Steadie Scaffolding and Davison Solution.
The celebration was warmly received by residents who praised both the investment in their scheme and the day itself. One resident commented how grateful and proud she was of the roof, while another said, 'The afternoon tea was lovely. There were a lot of happy faces and happy tears.'
Catherine Hartigan, Older Persons Services Team Manager at North Star, said:
“I’m delighted that residents will benefit from a brand-new roof and this important investment in keeping their homes and shared spaces safe and comfortable.
“It was heartwarming to see residents, the North Star team, Care team and Catering staff all enjoying a wonderful day of celebrations together. The singers in particular went down so well.
"The party was a lovely opportunity to bring everyone together and say thank you for their patience throughout the work.”
Paula Aungiers, Asset and Sustainability Manager, at North Star, said:
"The proactive replacement of the roof provides a long-term solution following a history of leaks and reactive repairs, helping to protect residents’ homes and reduce future disruption.
“The project reflects our commitment to investing in the quality and sustainability of our homes.
“We would also like to recognise the roofing contractor, Evenii, for their professional approach, high standard of workmanship and consideration for residents throughout the works."
Dean Goyns, Company Director at Evenii said: "We have enjoyed working alongside a great client, brilliant care staff, and residents. We are pleased that the roofs around the scheme are safe and secure for many years to come."
