Project: Craft Sessions at Aspen Gardens Sheltered Accommodation
Organisation: Creative Village CIC
Location: Stockton-on-Tees
Grant amount: £2,300
At North Star's Aspen Gardens sheltered accommodation for older people, Stockton-based Creative Village CIC ran a series of creative workshops.
Activities included glass painting, collage, seed bombs, painting, and lino printing. Residents enjoyed connecting with their neighbours through a fun activity that boosted their wellbeing and gave them something to proudly display in their homes. The funding helped cover the cost of materials, allowing participants to get the best and most varied experience from the sessions.
Project: Christmas Fair
Organisation: Boosbeck Village Hall
Location: Boosbeck
Grant amount: £1,170
Funding helped bring to life two much-loved festive events: a Christmas Fair and a sold-out Christmas Eve pantomime. Village halls play a vital role in creating inclusive, welcoming spaces, particularly in rural communities, but rising running and maintenance costs can make it difficult to put on events. Trustee Lindsey Armstrong said: “Thanks to this support, we were able to bring our community together, strengthen connections, and provide enjoyable entertainment for people and families of all ages.” The Christmas Fair featured raffles, refreshments, live performances and a surprise visit from the Grinch, with visitors praising the event as a celebration of strong community spirit.
Project: Essential Repair Work and Decorating at Children's Play Centre
Organisation: Lets Pretend CIC
Location: Hartlepool
Grant amount: £1,833
Lets Pretend provides a safe, interactive space for children to explore their imaginations, and families to connect and access resources to support them through financial hardship. The funding enabled essential repair work, including fixing the toilet, replacing damaged ceiling tiles, plastering the walls, and general painting. These improvements were vital to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and functional space for community activities. Lets Pretend Manager Tracey Bromley said, "The grant funding was amazing. If we'd had to use our funds for the repairs, we'd have struggled to fund our activities and may have only been able to run half as many. People have commented how much nicer the space is so we are very grateful".
We offer grants of up to £2,500 to help bring community projects and activities to life.
We’re especially keen to see projects that benefit North Star customers and link to one (or more) of our four big priorities:
We welcome applications from all the areas we work in, but priority will be given to:
If you’re part of a community group, resident association, charity, school, parish or town council, or North Star-supported scheme, you’re welcome to apply. You just need a group/project bank account (or an organisation that can receive the funds on your behalf).
Please use the form below to register your interest or contact the Communities team with your ideas.
Don’t worry about fancy editing - the video is just to help us visualise your project and understand how it will help the community! You could film as a group or just one person speaking to camera. We're not looking for fancy editing skills. What we want to know is the difference your project will make.
As part of your application, you will be asked to describe your project and what you expect it to achieve.
When reviewing applications, the panel will typically look for the following:
1. A clear need for your project in the community
Show strong evidence that your community will benefit.
Use facts, figures, or case studies to back this up.
Be specific about who your beneficiaries are and how you will reach them.
If you need our support, explain exactly what that would look like.
2. Connection to the community
Projects are stronger when they are rooted in a real need.
Highlight any partnership working – this shows your project is well-connected and supported locally.
3. A supporting video
North Star asks applicants to provide a short video alongside the application. This is your chance to bring the project to life. Strong videos often include:
Footage of your organisation or group in action.
The venue or location where the project will take place.
Contributions from beneficiaries or potential beneficiaries.
A focus on the positive difference your project will make.
You can reapply for funding whether you have received it previously or not; however, please note:
As part of the community grants scheme, we won't fund:
A member of staff from the Communities Team will check your application meets the eligibility requirements.
Eligible applications will be considered by a panel of North Star Your Voice tenants and staff. The panel will make a decision based on the information contained within the application form and in light of the other applications being considered. The impact the project has is an important factor in deciding which projects we fund. The decision of the Community Grants Panel will be final
You will be informed by email of the outcome of your grant application within 10 working days following the deadline date.
If approval is given this is pending receipt of any further information requested e.g. copies of relevant policies or evidence of applicable.
