Aids and Adaptations

We can help you live in your home independently through our Aids & Adaptation Service. This could be equipment or an alteration made to your home to help you or someone living in your home live independently. The changes should make it safer and easier to carry out your daily life.

If this sounds useful, speak to your Housing Officer first. Sometimes moving to a different property in your area might be your best solution. You can also contact us by calling 03000 11 00 11 or via email: customer.services@northstarhg.co.uk.

There are two categories of changes we can help you with:

Aid or minor adaptation:

  • Grab rails (internal or external)
  • Steps
  • Lever taps
  • Small removable ramps
  • Sensory Items (flashing & amplified doorbell etc.)

Major adaptation:

  • Hoists
  • Larger ramps
  • Stairlifts
  • Level access showers
  • Garden path handrails for support

How can North Star assist with Aids & Adaptations?

Small changes requests can be made by calling 03000 11 00 11 or via email at adaptations@northstarhg.co.uk. These are free of charge to you and are often simple to arrange.

Major changes referrals are usually carried out by your local authority (council), as an occupational therapist will need to assess your needs to recommend the correct work. Contact us first so we can help you with this process.

North Star, as your landlord, will be involved as well, but the local authority will normally carry out the works via a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) process.

The local authority may require a financial assessment to see if you need any contribution, but often it isn’t.

Your ability to continue enjoying your home is important to us, so we don’t want you to struggle. Please let us know if you think you might benefit from our Aids and Adaptations Service so we can work out solutions together.
