Supported housing is under growing pressure. While the recent Spending Review gave a welcome boost to house building, it did not provide much-needed dedicated funding for support services. Without urgent government action, more supported housing could close, putting even more pressure on already stretched services like the NHS, social care, and emergency services.
Supported housing is a huge part of what we do at North Star. Across the North East, we provide over 600 units of supported accommodation, from women’s refuges and homes for young people and families, to sheltered housing for older people and those with learning disabilities. These services are a lifeline for our customers.
Almost a quarter of our staff work in supported housing, making a difference every day. If you’d like to join them, you can view our current vacancies here: Working with Us and Job Opportunities - North Star Housing Group
We invited some of our local MPs to see firsthand the impact that supported housing has in their constituency. We hope that their visits highlighted the real need for action from the government to protect these schemes, and others like them:
Worsley Park, Darlington
On 13 August, MP Lola McEvoy visited Worsley Park, sheltered housing for over 55s, to chat with residents about the scheme and the local area. Residents stay active, social, and connected through regular events. Without it, older people could face isolation and unsafe living situations.
Aspen Gardens, Stockton
On 28 August, MP Matt Vickers visited Aspen Gardens, extra care housing for over 55s with a community bistro and community activities. Without this, many residents wouldn't have a safe, vibrant home where they can maintain their independence and a hub where they can socialise.
155/157 Norton Road, Stockton
On 30 August, MP Chris McDonald visited our Norton Road scheme, temporary accommodation for young people and families at risk of homelessness. Without it, many would face sofa surfing, sleeping on the streets, or relying on crisis services that are already stretched.
You can support the #SOSHousing and Starts at Home campaigns by sharing their message on social media and raising awareness of the vital role supported housing plays in our communities. Visit National Housing Federation - Save Our Supported Housing to find out more.
