Tips for Staying Safe in the Warm Weather

The Met Office has given a yellow heat warning for the North East. This means we’re expecting very warm weather until early next week.

Here are some easy ways to help keep you, your loved ones, and your pets safe whether you're at home or out and about:

Keep cool at home

  • Close curtains or blinds to keep the sun out
  • Open windows early in the morning or later in the evening to let in cooler air
  • Use a fan if you have one – putting a bowl of ice in front can help cool the room
  • Drink water often – don’t wait until you feel thirsty

Check in on others

Some people don’t always notice when they’re too hot or thirsty. This includes:

  • Older people
  • Babies and children
  • People with health problems

Check in on neighbours, friends or family. A quick visit or phone call can really help.

Look out for signs like:

  • Feeling dizzy or tired
  • Headaches
  • Fast breathing

These can be signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke which is very serious. The NHS has helpful advice here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/

Stay safe at the beach

If you're going to the beach or a river:

  • Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm
  • Wear sun cream, a hat and loose clothes
  • Take plenty of water and snacks
  • Never leave children or pets alone
  • Be careful in the water – it might still be cold, even on hot days
  • In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the coastguard

Look after your pets

Warm weather can be dangerous for pets, too. Here’s how to help them:

  • Give them lots of fresh water
  • Make sure they have shade and cool air
  • Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the day – pavements can burn their paws when it’s hot
  • Never leave pets in cars or conservatories, even with the windows open
  • Some pets can get sunburn – ask your vet if they need pet-safe sun cream

Please share this with anyone who might need it. Let’s all enjoy the sunshine safely!
