What is a handyperson task?
A small repair / handyperson task is defined as a non-skilled task that, in normal circumstances, could be undertaken by most adults.
Inside the home, this could include:
• Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
• Changing lampshades.
• Trimming and fixing loose carpet to make safe.
• Erecting shelves.
• Small repairs to doors such as replacing panels, re-hanging and
replacing handles.
• Fit new or replacement locks.
• Putting up curtain rails and curtains.
• Changing curtains.
• Fitting draught excluders.
• Fit telephone extension leads.
• Moving or hanging pictures/mirrors.
• Replacing toilet seats.
• Renew bath/sink sealant.
• Make safe trailing or loose wires.
Outside of the home, this could be:
• Fitting battery operated doorbells.
• Make small repairs to garden gates (new latch or bolts/new
hinge/s)(L)
• Repair or erect washing line.
Inside and Outside Security:
• Fitting door chains/bolts.
• Fitting battery operated smoke alarms and CO2 detectors.
• Fit window locks.
• Fit new or replacement locks (unless Landlord responsibility).
Tasks carried out as part of the Handyperson service should usually take no more than one to two hours
Tasks would not include:
• Any electrical work other than replacing plugs or fuses.
• Any work connected with supply of Gas.
• Plastering
• Fitting or repairing central heating.
• Flat pack assembly
• Mending washing machines/boilers/cookers or TVs or other
equipment not mentioned above.
• Any work which is likely to take more than 2 hours to complete.
• Any work which requires trade qualifications and where these
qualifications are not held.
• Any work connected with the roofs of buildings. (Apart from single
storey guttering)
• Any work on greenhouses or conservatories.
• Any job requiring the use of heavy equipment other than small drills
and essential electrical equipment to complete tasks.
• Any work not covered by the organisation’s insurance policies
relating to staff and service users.
• Any works which are Landlord responsibilities.
• Any work requiring access to be gained from adjacent properties,
where written permission has not been granted.
